...is nothing to sneeze at:
For it is Cologne Cathedral itself.
Without founding the ZDV in the year of 1842 by a group of dedicated and farsighted citizens, Cologne's landmark would presumably still be characterising the cityscape as an enormous torso - just like it had been for more than 300 years.
Only a few decades after founding of the "Central-Dombau-Verein" /
"Central-Cathedral-Building-Society" so its name then, as well as the laying of the foundation stone for continuing construction of the Cathedral on September 4th, 1842, the festivity of the Cathedral's finalisation could be celebrated as national consecration observance.
But herewith the cathedral is not completed, since year after year wide-ranging building operations are indispensable for the preservation of this UNESCO world heritage. Down to the present day it is above all the by now over 13.000 members of the ZDV, who are committed as descendants of the former founding members so to speak and making the essential contribution for the cathedral's preservation.
