Cathedral-building-Mystery: Cathedral-building Chronicles
Over six centuries it took to build, numerous generations of architects, sculptors, bricklayers and craftsmen came and went, uniting them through all this time in one overall sigh: “That thing will never get done!” And it looked like it, since 300 years after laying of the foundation stone in 1248 the Cologne Cathedral stood half-finished like a torso for another 300 years.
But then a miracle came to pass: In Paris one half of the medieval construction plan for the Cathedral’s facade turned up again, the actual original by Cologne Cathedral’s master builder Johannes. A sign from Heaven! French diplomat, statesman and author of German background Karl Friedrich Reinhard, a friend of art collector and Cathedral lover Sulpiz Boisserée, brought the precious document to Frankfurt and sent it to the dedicated protectionist of the Cathedral’s completion briefly after Christmas in 1815. Boisserée had been dreaming about the perfection of the magnificent Gothic building ever since 1808. Henceforth he went to stake all his power to find comrades, to pool vigours in a Germany not yet united. And so it came to pass that poets and intellectuals, noble people and aristocrats, wealthy mercantilists and townsmen joined in the high-born original family of ZDV:
38 years full of efforts and endurance and tenaciousness later, it was accomplished, “that thing” was actually yet again finished.
