The masterpiece of Gothic architecture is a building of superlatives:
Even during its completion in the 19th century Cologne Cathedral was the highest building worldwide.
Over the entire construction period of 632 years the original construction plans have survived at a large extent – that is why today Cologne Cathedral accurately corresponds in large part to the blueprints of the architect in the 13th century.
The west facade for instance was planned as the greatest ecclesiastical facade of the world – on a developable area of nearly 8000 square metres, flanked by two mightful towers of 157 metres in height each.
The most valuable item that Cologne Cathedral holds in trust, are the mortal remains of the Three Wise Men enshrined.
This great artwork from the Middle Ages is the major reliquary casket of the occident.
Since 1996 Cologne Cathedral is part of the UNESCO-world heritage.
