The Initiators

Sulpiz Boisserée

born August 3rd, 1783 in Cologne, died May 2nd, 1854 in Bonn

Sulpiz Boisserée was one of the most committed supporters of completing Cologne Cathedral (cf. ZDV-The History). Since 1808 he made drawings of the Cathedral, wrote essays, gave lectures. Historian of art and architecture became the Cathedral’s first protector. His indefatigable solicitation acting from deep conviction, sparking others, ultimately lead to success.

August Reichensperger

born March 22nd, 1808 in Koblenz, died July 16th, 1895 in Cologne

Jurist, Doctor of Philosophy and dedicated politician (member of the Frankfurt Parliament in 1848) he also devoted himself to the arts, architecture and literature.
Since 1840 he strongly supported the Cathedral’s construction likewise as intense as Sulpiz Boisserée.
Acting for conscience’ sake Reichensperger also spoke from artistic conviction for Gothic architectural style, which he interpreted as Christian per se.
The co-founder of the Central-Cathedral-building-Society was also a member of the administrative board and until 1844 the society’s first managing secretary general.
Repeatedly he declined the poll to be elected president of the Central-Cathedral-building-Society, but remained editor of the “Cologne Cathedral Paper” ("Kölner Domblatt"), the society’s most important voice.
On May 20th 1895, briefly before his death, he was given the freedom of the town.

Joseph Görres

born January 25th, 1776 in Koblenz, died January 29th, 1848 in Munich

Adherent of the French Revolution and protectionist of democracy he was one of the most influential Catholic publicists in his day.
1814 Görres founded the paper “Rheinischer Merkur”, where he published on November 20th in the very same year the proclamation for completing Cologne’s Cathedral, which leapt into fame. And he felt confident, the Cathedral completed would become the “symbol of the new empire, that we want to build.”
